What is a mushroom-head copper still?

A mushroom-head copper still is a traditional copper still characterised by an integrated direct-cooling condenser positioned above the boiler.

The mushroom-shaped cooling section uses circulating water to cool and condense the vapours produced during distillation. This compact configuration distinguishes it from stills that use a separate lateral coil condenser.

How does the mushroom condenser work?

The mushroom condenser includes connections for cooling-water inlet and outlet. Water circulates through the upper cooling chamber while the still is operating, helping condense the vapours produced in the boiler.

Because the condenser is integrated into the upper part of the still, the system has a compact configuration compared with models that use a separate cooling vessel and coil.

The main difference lies in the cooling configuration. A mushroom-head still has its direct-cooling condenser integrated into the upper part of the unit, while a coil condenser still uses a separate lateral coil immersed in a cooling container.

The mushroom-head configuration can be useful when compactness is a priority. A separate coil condenser may instead be preferred when there is sufficient space for the external cooling vessel and a separate cooling arrangement is desired.
