Burnable sulfur discs are non-dripping sulfur tablets used to sulfurise casks, vats and beehives. They are used for the sanitation, disinfection and dry preservation of wine vessels such as wooden barrels and barriques.
How do sulfur discs work?
When burned, the discs produce sulfur dioxide (SO₂), which disinfects the wood and reaches difficult areas inside the vessel. The discs burn evenly without dripping.
Light the disc and lower it into the cask using an iron wire secured to the bunghole. When removing the wire, avoid scraping it against the walls to prevent any unburnt material from falling inside. Casks should be dry and aired before sulfurising.
Each 10 g sulfur tablet produces approximately 11.5 g of SO₂, sufficient for sulfurising approximately 6–7 hL of cask capacity.
