The hydrometer is an essential tool during fermentation because it helps you determine when fermentation has finished for your beer or wine, so you know when it’s time to bottle.
At the beginning of fermentation the hydrometer reading will be higher and the stem will sink deeper; when fermentation is complete it will stabilize and float at a lower reading. The hydrometer scale ranges from 0.990 to 1.100 and includes colored bands to assist beginners: a yellow band marking the start of fermentation labeled “start beer”, and another yellow band indicating the end of fermentation labeled “bottle” to suggest bottling your beer or wine.
The hydrometer comes in a plastic storage case with instructions and a reference chart. We recommend purchasing a matching test jar (transparent cylinder) in which you can pour the beer or wine to be measured (the supplied case is not suitable for taking readings).
