Calcium carbonate is a non-aggressive product, free from harmful substances, with nutritive and absorbent properties that make it suitable for different uses. These include use in winemaking as a wine deacidifier and as a fertiliser in agriculture.

Calcium carbonate: wine deacidification

It is the ideal product to use when wine has particularly high acidity values.

As a theoretical reference, to reduce titratable acidity by approximately 1 g/L, expressed as tartaric acid, around 0.67 g/L of calcium carbonate is required, equivalent to 67 g/hL. Before treating the entire batch, it is advisable to carry out preliminary tests on small quantities and check acidity and pH to determine the actual dosage required.

Use of calcium carbonate in vineyards

Using calcium carbonate on vines in vineyards helps support the lignification process of the plants, allowing greater resistance during winter periods.

Other uses of calcium carbonate in agriculture

In agriculture, calcium carbonate is mainly used to supply calcium and help correct acidic soils. Use and quantities must be assessed according to soil characteristics and the instructions provided for the product.

In plants, it helps promote healthy, vigorous growth. In fact, in soils where this substance is deficient, plant and leaf growth may be hindered. In agriculture, it can be used both in agricultural soils and in soils for ornamental plants.

pH correction in acidic soils:

• sandy soil: from 18 to 36 quintals per hectare;
• silty soil: from 36 to 54 quintals per hectare;
• clayey soil: from 54 to 90 quintals per hectare.
