Glycerin oil is the ideal product for operating hydraulic-action machinery. In oenology its main use is as an alternative to the original lifting fluid in hydraulic jacks for wine presses built before 1984, which are fitted with leather or rubber collars (not polyurethane).
These jacks were designed to use lifting hydraulic oil; however, glycerin oil or liquid paraffin is now widely preferred. The use of glycerin oil—together with paraffin—therefore arises from the need to replace lifting hydraulic oil in older jacks.
