Self-brett brettanomyces wine test kit
Self-brett® is an innovative wine analysis kit for the semi-quantitative detection of Brettanomyces in alcoholic beverages. It combines a species-specific, culture-dependent method with an easy, ready-to-use dip-slide technology, enabling the producer to perform the analysis independently.
What is Brettanomyces?
Brettanomyces is a genus of yeasts in the Pichiaceae family and is the most widespread in alcoholic beverages after Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This organism is one of the main causes of certain wine faults—off-odours and off-flavours—that can lead to the “dequalification” of the wine and consequent devaluation. The organoleptic defects caused by Brettanomyces, known as the “brett note”, are described as wet cloth, mouse taint, horse sweat, stable, paint, plastic, etc. It is therefore essential to detect this microorganism early; it does not originate in the cellar but in the vineyard.
Why use Self-brett
The product offers a dual advantage: first, the ability to perform everything independently without necessarily turning to a specialised laboratory; second, the clarity of results, as the presence of Brettanomyces can be observed visually through a colour change (from blue to yellow), olfactorily via the development of the typical “brett” smell, and by observing colonies on the agar medium.
Another key benefit is the significant cost reduction compared to laboratory analyses.
What can Self-brett be used for?
This wine analysis kit can be used to assess the presence of Brettanomyces in alcoholic beverages (e.g., wine, beer and cider), as well as on equipment used in the cellar.
